Home / General news / 1st Term Tag Rugby® Youth Report

Tag Rugby® is a fast and fun game where youngsters, who might not have been exposed to rugby before, have the opportunity to try it out in a fun, safe and controlled environment.

For those unfamiliar with the sport of Tag Rugby®, here’s a list of events that took place in the first term.

Takealot.com Cape Town 10’s Tag Rugby® Coaching Clinic

This year marked the 4th year that the Tag Rugby® Association in conjunction with the City of Cape Town, South African Rugby Legends and the Organizers of the Cape Town 10s event came together to host children from the Cape Flats. Each year the children get the opportunity to be coached basic skills by their legends and be exposed to Tag Rugby as tool to teach them the basic skills of playing the game of rugby.

The event was fantastic, we had 150 boys and girls that came out to enjoy a game of Tag Rugby® with their legends. It was great to see Gerhardi and Bob Skinstad rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in the clinic. The kids had loads of fun and certainly went back home having learnt a new skill and met new friends on the day.

School Coaching

Tag Rugby® is offered as a paid extra mural sport at a growing number of schools and the game is continuously gaining popularity amongst learners.

The first term kicked off on a very high note. Our passionate coaches exposed 200 girls and 150 boys to the game of Tag Rugby® in a very fun and active manner in 6 schools in the southern suburbs of Cape Town.

The 2nd Term promises to be a busy term for the Tag Rugby® Association with more schools joining the Tag Family. We would love to welcome Bishops Prep, Somerset College and Star College to the Tag Rugby® Family for the 2nd and 3rd Term. We are certain that our coaches will love working with your children.

Adopt-a-School Programme

The Adopt-a-School programme has played a significant role in changing children’s lives through the power of sport. We have experienced firsthand that the programme has created hope where once there was despair. A special word of thanks to our sponsors/donor’s for their continuous role in playing their part in giving back to our communities and making a difference through sport.

Through the generosity of our sponsors and donors we saw the programme continue to roll out throughout the country for its 8th year to date. This year alone there have been 5 new Schools adopted namely:

  1. Chapel Street Primary School – Cape Town,
  2. Pro Ed – Cape Town,
  3. 3 schools in Thokoza – Johannesburg.

The main aim of the programme is to expose the children to a healthy, active lifestyle and also to teach these young children valuable life skills through the programme.

Presles Tag Rugby Inter Schools League

This year we saw the launch of the Presles Tag Rugby® Inter School’s League where we had 5 primary schools (150 children ) from the Adopt-a-School Programme in Atlantis participating every Tuesday afternoon in structured league fixtures. It was great to see the teachers rolling up their sleeves and getting involved.

We are extremely excited about the league and are now looking into running this league during the winter months as well as rolling out more leagues where we have enough schools in one area. We would like to thank Presles, the City of Cape Town and DCAS for coming on board to ensure that the games were a possible, without our partners we wouldn’t have had a successful league.

Tag Rugby Youth League @ Villagers Rugby Club

This year we witnessed the first ever Tag Rugby Youth League games kicking off the ground at Villagers Rugby Club. The league games run over a period of 4 weeks in the afternoons, during the summer months. The main aim of the league is to improve sport skills and getting both boys and girls fit for the winter sport codes. Teams participating in the league are not restricted to register as a school but are more encouraged to register as individuals or groups of friends to create a relaxed, friendly environment.

The response was positive from everyone that attended the league over the four week period. We are certain that the numbers will grow from strength to strength in the following winter and summer months. Please do follow us on our social media for updates for the winter league games and new venues for the leagues.

Summer Session

It was fantastic to see Rondebosch Boys’ Prep School supporting us once again for our annual summer coaching session at Gary Kirsten Cricket Oval, which took place every Friday afternoon from 14:15 until 15:00. Our coaches have done phenomenal work with this group, we could see the vast improvement on their skills, mainly in the handling and passing of the ball. The understanding of the game did improve immensely from when they kicked off with their first session. We are more than certain now that the group is physically fit and well skilled to take on their winter sports!
